How do I get my hotel cited in Google's AI Overviews?

Short answer

There's no special technique for getting a hotel cited in Google's AI Overviews. Google states that the same SEO best practices apply, that there are no additional technical requirements, and that no special markup or files are needed. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and able to appear in Search with a snippet. Beyond eligibility, the most practical approach is to publish specific, accurate, helpful pages that directly answer the questions travellers ask about your hotel and area. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

Eligibility: the non-negotiables

  • The page is indexed (check with URL Inspection in Search Console).
  • It isn't blocked by robots.txt and has no noindex.
  • It can show a snippet — no nosnippet or very restrictive max-snippet settings on content you want used.
  • It meets Google's Search technical requirements and spam policies.

What makes a page worth citing

AI Overviews link to pages that help people explore a topic further. For hotels, that tends to mean pages with concrete, first-hand information:

  • Location and access: "How to get from the airport to [area]" written from local knowledge, with real options and times.
  • Specific needs: accessibility details, travelling with pets, family facilities — stated precisely.
  • Destination planning: seasonal guides, neighbourhood guides, event information you genuinely know about.
  • Property facts: clear room, policy, and amenity information for searches about your hotel.

Google's helpful-content guidance applies: people-first content, clear authorship, and trustworthy information.

Controls that can prevent citation

Google notes that nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex limit how your content can be shown in Search, including AI features. Use them deliberately, not by accident.

How to check and measure

  • Search the questions you've written for and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links.
  • In Search Console, AI feature traffic is part of the Performance report's "Web" data — watch the pages you've improved.
  • Expect variation: AI Overviews appear only for some queries and change over time.

Common mistakes

  • Adding markup or "AI files" expecting citations — Google says they aren't needed.
  • Thin, generic destination posts that add nothing new.
  • Accidentally applying nosnippet site-wide.

Checklist

  • Target pages indexed and snippet-eligible
  • Pages answer specific traveller questions with first-hand detail
  • Facts accurate and current
  • Clear authorship and contact information
  • Performance of improved pages tracked in Search Console
