Structured Data 2 min read
Does my hotel need structured data?
Short answer
Most hotel websites benefit from structured data, but it's not a magic switch. Structured data describes your hotel in a standard, machine-readable way — name, address, check-in times, amenities — so search engines and other systems can interpret your pages with less ambiguity. It can make pages eligible for certain enhanced search features, but it doesn't guarantee rich results or better rankings, and Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. If your basic property markup is missing or wrong, adding accurate markup is a worthwhile, low-risk improvement.

What structured data does
- Gives search engines explicit facts about your property instead of making them infer everything from prose.
- Makes certain pages eligible for enhanced displays where Google supports them — eligibility, not a guarantee.
- Reinforces consistent identity information across your site.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't directly improve rankings on its own.
- It doesn't force rich results — Google decides when to show them.
- It doesn't unlock AI visibility: Google states there's no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- It doesn't fix inaccurate or thin content.
When it's clearly worth doing
- Your site has no lodging markup at all.
- Existing markup contains wrong addresses or phone numbers from an old theme.
- You manage several properties and need each one clearly identified.
- You're rebuilding your site anyway.

Rules to follow
- Mark up only what's visible to users — Google's guidelines are explicit about this.
- Keep markup accurate when details change.
- Don't add self-serving review markup expecting star ratings.
Common mistakes
- Expecting immediate ranking gains.
- Copying markup from another hotel and forgetting to change details.
- Adding FAQ markup to chase rich results — Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search.
Checklist
- I know what markup my site currently has
- Main property page uses an accurate lodging type
- Markup matches visible content
