How can I measure my hotel's visibility in AI-generated answers?

Short answer

Measuring visibility in AI-generated answers is still imprecise, so the honest approach is structured observation. Define a set of realistic guest questions, ask them in the assistants that matter to your market on a regular schedule, and record whether your hotel is mentioned, how it's described, and which sources are cited. Track changes over time and treat results as samples, not rankings — answers vary between sessions and users. Combine these observations with what you can measure directly, such as referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics.

Why this is hard

  • Answers vary by wording, user context, location, and time.
  • Most assistants don't provide hotels with impression or ranking reports comparable to Search Console.
  • A single prompt says little; patterns across many observations say more.

Step 1: Define your question set

Write 20–40 questions real guests might ask, grouped by theme:

  • Discovery: "Best boutique hotels in [area] for couples"
  • Needs: "Pet-friendly hotel near [landmark] with parking"
  • Brand: "Tell me about [Hotel Name]" — checks accuracy
  • Comparison: "[Hotel Name] vs [competitor]"

Step 2: Observe consistently

For each question and assistant, record:

  • Date and assistant used.
  • Whether your hotel is mentioned (yes / partially / no).
  • How it's described — and whether the facts are correct.
  • Sources cited, if shown.
  • Competitors mentioned.

Repeat on a fixed schedule (for example monthly), using the same wording.

Step 3: Analyse patterns, not single answers

  • Which themes include you, and which never do?
  • Are descriptions accurate?
  • Which sources are cited repeatedly? Those are places to make sure your information is correct and present.

Step 4: Measure what is measurable

  • Referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics (where the referrer is passed).
  • Search Console: Google includes traffic from its AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) in your overall Search Console performance data, so branded and topic queries there reflect those surfaces too — though not as a separate AI report.
  • Branded search trends over time.
  • Direct bookings and enquiries mentioning AI tools, if you ask guests how they found you.

Being honest about results

Report observations as observations: "mentioned in 6 of 20 discovery questions this month" — not "ranked #1 in ChatGPT". Avoid any tool or report that presents a single "AI visibility score" without explaining how it was sampled. See what prompt sampling is.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing conclusions from one prompt.
  • Changing question wording each month.
  • Ignoring accuracy — being mentioned with wrong facts can hurt.
  • Treating sampled observations as rankings.

Checklist

  • Documented question set by theme
  • Fixed observation schedule and wording
  • Mention, accuracy, and cited sources recorded
  • AI referral traffic tracked in analytics
  • Results reported as observations with clear limits
