What is prompt sampling and how reliable is it?
Short answer
Prompt sampling means asking AI tools a defined set of realistic questions on a regular schedule and recording the answers — whether your hotel appears, how it's described, and which sources are cited. It's the main way to observe AI visibility, because most tools don't offer hotels impression reports. It's useful for spotting patterns and errors, but it's a sample, not a measurement of everything: answers vary with wording, user context, location, and time. Reliable sampling uses fixed questions, repeated runs, clear records, and honest reporting of limits.

Why answers vary
- Different wording produces different answers.
- Location, language, and user history can change results.
- Products update their models and sources.
- Some answers include randomness by design.
Design a useful sample
- 20–40 questions grouped by theme (discovery, needs, brand, comparison).
- Fixed wording you reuse every time.
- Defined tools — the assistants your guests actually use.
- Repeat runs, for example three times per question per tool, to see consistency.
- Neutral conditions where possible (signed out, same language and location setting).
What to record
- Date, tool, question, and run number.
- Mentioned: yes / partially / no.
- Description accuracy.
- Sources cited.
- Competitors mentioned.
Interpreting results
- Look for patterns: themes where you never appear, recurring inaccuracies, frequently cited sources.
- Compare over time using the same questions.
- Treat a single run as an anecdote.
Report honestly
- State the method: questions, tools, runs, dates.
- Report proportions of observations, not rankings.
- Combine with measurable data such as AI referral traffic and Search Console, where Google includes AI features in overall Web data.
Common mistakes
- Changing questions every month.
- One run per question.
- Presenting results as a "rank" or score without method.
Checklist
- Fixed question set by theme
- Tools and conditions defined
- Repeat runs recorded
- Patterns analysed over time
- Method and limits stated in reports
