Why does ChatGPT give wrong information about my hotel?

Short answer

AI assistants usually give wrong information about a hotel because the information they draw on is wrong, outdated, inconsistent, or missing. Common sources are old OTA or directory listings, outdated website pages, an unmanaged Google Business Profile, or reviews describing things that have since changed. You generally can't edit an AI's answer directly; you fix it by correcting the underlying sources and making the right facts clear and consistent, then checking again over time. Some assistants also offer a way to report inaccurate responses.

Common causes

  • Outdated listings: a directory still shows your old name, phone number, or "no pets" policy.
  • Conflicting information: your website says breakfast is included, an OTA listing says it isn't.
  • Missing information: your site never states check-in times or parking, so the assistant guesses or fills the gap from elsewhere.
  • Old reviews: guests describe a restaurant that has since closed.
  • Name confusion: a similarly named hotel nearby.
  • Training data lag: some answers draw on information that predates recent changes.

How to fix it

1. Record exactly what's wrong

Ask the assistant several variations of the question and note each incorrect fact and any sources it cites.

2. Trace the likely source

Search for the incorrect fact. Check your Google Business Profile, major OTAs, directories, tourism sites, and your own website's older pages.

3. Correct it at the source

  • Update your website, including old blog posts and PDFs.
  • Update your Business Profile and OTA listings.
  • Request corrections from directories and publications.
  • Respond to reviews where a factual clarification helps future guests.

4. State the correct fact clearly

Write the correct information plainly on your website, ideally where guests would look for it. Ambiguity invites guessing.

5. Make your identity unambiguous

Use the same name, address, and phone number everywhere. See brand consistency and AI visibility.

6. Check again over time

Corrections aren't reflected instantly. Recheck periodically, and use any in-product feedback options to report clearly inaccurate answers.

Hospitality example

An assistant repeatedly says a hotel has "no parking". The cause: a five-year-old directory listing and an old FAQ PDF on the hotel's own site. The hotel updates both, adds a clear parking section to its location page ("12 private spaces, €15 per night, reservation required"), and records later answers to confirm the change.

Common mistakes

  • Only updating the website and ignoring listings.
  • Leaving old PDFs and pages online.
  • Expecting instant correction.
