Can hotels pay to appear in AI search results?
Short answer
Hotels can't buy placement in organic AI answers or organic search results. Google states it doesn't accept payment to rank pages higher, and its free hotel booking links can't be bought either. What hotels can pay for are clearly labelled advertising products, such as Google hotel campaigns that show ads alongside hotel search results; advertising options in AI products vary and change, and ads are presented separately from organic answers. Be wary of agencies selling "guaranteed AI placement" — no third party controls what AI tools recommend organically.

What can't be bought
- Organic search rankings: Google says it doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher.
- Free booking link rankings: Google says its commercial relationship with providers doesn't affect ranking, and nobody can pay for a higher one.
- Organic AI answers: an agency or third party can't buy your way into a tool's organic recommendations. Where AI products carry advertising, it's a separate, labelled product sold by the platform itself.
What can be bought
- Hotel ads on Google: paid campaigns shown alongside hotel search results on Search and Maps, using a price feed and landing pages, usually via an integration partner.
- Other search and metasearch ads, clearly labelled as ads.
- Advertising in AI products, where offered — formats and availability change, so check each platform's current documentation.
How to spot misleading offers
Be cautious of anyone who:
- guarantees your hotel will be "recommended by ChatGPT" or "in AI Overviews";
- won't explain their method;
- sells "AI listings" or "AI directories" that claim to feed recommendations;
- reports a proprietary "AI rank" without showing how it's sampled.
What to invest in instead
- Clear, accurate facts on your website and listings.
- Allowing AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot.
- Genuine reviews and earned coverage.
- Free booking links, then tested paid campaigns.
