Will AI search replace OTAs for hotel bookings?

Short answer

Nobody knows whether AI search will replace OTAs, and confident predictions either way should be treated with caution. OTAs provide inventory, payments, customer service, loyalty programmes, and reviews — functions that don't disappear because discovery moves into AI tools, and OTAs themselves are adopting AI. What's more likely in the near term is that discovery spreads across more surfaces: search, maps, AI assistants, and OTAs. Hotels prepare best by being accurately represented everywhere and making direct booking easy, without betting the business on one prediction.

What OTAs do beyond discovery

  • Large inventories and price comparison.
  • Payment processing and customer service.
  • Loyalty programmes and stored traveller preferences.
  • Review ecosystems.
  • Distribution in markets a hotel can't reach alone.

What AI changes

  • Travellers can describe needs in natural language and get shortlists.
  • Answers can include hotels from many sources, with links to book.
  • Google's AI features sit within Search, alongside its hotel booking module and free booking links.

Plausible directions (not predictions)

  • Discovery becomes more conversational across many products.
  • OTAs, metasearch, and hotels all appear as booking options within AI-assisted journeys.
  • Accurate data — rates, availability, facts — matters more, because tools compare options quickly.

How to prepare either way

  1. Keep your facts accurate and consistent everywhere.
  2. Connect rates to Google through free booking links. See Google free booking links.
  3. Make booking direct easy and worthwhile. See how to increase direct bookings.
  4. Keep a balanced channel mix and track costs. See the real cost of an OTA booking.
  5. Observe how AI tools describe and link to you.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting OTAs because of a prediction.
  • Ignoring AI tools because they're "not big yet".
  • Paying for "AI channel" products with no documented reach.

Checklist

  • Accurate data across all channels
  • Free booking links active
  • Direct booking path strong
  • Channel costs reviewed quarterly
  • AI observations recorded monthly
