How do I handle a hotel name change on Google?
Short answer
To change a hotel's name on Google, update your existing Google Business Profile rather than creating a new one, using the new name exactly as it appears on your signage and branding. Google notes that changing a verified business name may require verifying again. Update your website, titles, structured data, and contact pages at the same time, then work through OTAs, tourism boards, and directories. If your domain changes too, treat it as a site move with permanent redirects. Mention the former name once on your website so guests and systems can connect the two.

Before the change
- Make sure signage, website, and branding will switch on the same date.
- Gather a list of every listing. See which directories matter.
Google Business Profile
- Edit the business name on your existing profile — don't create a new one.
- Use the new name exactly as on your signage, without added keywords.
- Expect a review of the change, and possibly re-verification.
- Update photos showing the new signage.
Creating a second profile causes duplicates. See fixing duplicate listings.
Website
- Update titles, headings, footer, contact page, and structured data.
- Add a short note on the about page: "formerly [old name]".
- Update the site name and logo.
If the domain changes
Treat it as a site move: map old URLs to new ones, use permanent redirects, keep them for at least a year, and use Search Console's Change of Address tool for every verified variant of the old domain. See protecting rankings during a redesign.
Other listings
Update OTAs, metasearch, tourism boards, review sites, associations, and social profiles. Ask your booking engine and channel manager to update connected data, including Google hotel price listings.
After the change
- Search both names on Google and Maps.
- Check how AI tools describe you; correct sources still using the old name. See brand consistency and AI visibility.
Common mistakes
- New profile instead of editing the old one.
- Website updated but structured data forgotten.
- Domain changed without redirects.
Checklist
- Business Profile name edited (not recreated)
- Website, titles, and structured data updated
- Former name mentioned on the website
- Redirects and Change of Address if the domain changed
- All listings updated
